Terrasse du Printemps!

When in Paris, a sight not to be missed would be a panoramic view of the city. There are several places where you can view la ville lumière from above (Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, Tour Montparnasse, Sacre-Coeur, Arc de Triomphe, Centre Georges Pompidou). My personal favourite would be from the Arc de Triomphe, because all the twelve avenues departing from Place de l'Etoile can be seen, and also from the centre Georges Pompidou, because I love the view of the Parisian rooftops in different hues of grey (and the little smoke coming out if you can picture it!).

On our last day in Paris, maman decided to do some last-minute shopping at Printemps. So, I took the opportunity to check out the panoramic view from le grand magasin. It was love at first sight!

The view is, of course, breathtaking (can any view from Paris be anything less?!). The self-service eatery (one of the cheapest for the view, methinks!) is also great and the plants that decorated the seating areas add a nice touch of greenery.

It might be a bit difficult to locate the terrace, though, as Printemps Haussmann consists of three buildings. What you would need to do is to go to the building that houses the cosmetics and home department. From there, take the elevator to the 8th floor and then take the escalator to the 9th floor and voila! you're in panoramic heaven! ;)

Definitely planning for a return trip to the lovely terrace. The only thing I'll be doing differently next time is that I'll, first, buy my food from Cojean, which can be located at the underground level of Printemps (I love their selection of salads, soups, and sweet treats). Then, I'll have myself a small picnic on the rooftop terrace. C'est Parfait, non?! ;)

(all pictures are taken from the terrace!)

Perfect Vision!

As my nearest and dearest will likely tell you, I have a slight obsession with prescription glasses. I love how putting on a pair can change the way you look instantaneously. Ever since I've started to collect them about two years ago, which was about the time I decided that I would wear them regularly and not just when it pleases me, I began to be more aware of other people's eyewear as well. I started to notice that the Parisians always (always!) seem to have the most stylish prescription glasses (and it matches their outfits too!).

Now, whenever we find ourselves in Paris, I try to scout for new pairs to add to my collection. Usually, I like to purchase one personal item for every Paris trip. It doesn't have to be the most expensive item, but just a keepsake to remind me of the city and that particular trip (an umbrella, a bag, costume jewellery, etc). This trip I was lucky enough to have found a pair of glasses!

I was especially happy with this pair because it's different from the others within my collection. I tend to favour a lot of tortoiseshells and cats-eye glasses ( I have only one in metal!). To be fair, this one has a slight tortoiseshell-like pattern at the top but I love the fact that it's red! I don't have one in this colour yet and I love the shape of it. I think I look intellectual, without looking nerdy; classy, without being old-fashioned (yes, if you can't guess already, I'm in love with my new glasses!).

As I said before, I always keep a lookout for interesting eyewear whenever I'm in Paris. We love to check out small trendy boutiques within le Marais, but also the big ones in more central locations like on Avenue de l'Opera, the row of boutiques near the Jardin du Palais Royal, or even the grand magasins.

One particular shop we always make a point to visit is Retrovision on Rue Rambuteau. One, because the store itself is aesthetically pleasing and second, because they always have the most amazing collection that are both unique and trendy ( plus, I always feel so cool and hip just browsing at the shop ha!ha!ha! ) . The last time we visited, my husband managed to find the most perfect pair of  Lesca prescription glasses which fitted his every requirements ( he had this picture in mind of riding a bicycle in Paris wearing a suit and the trendy glasses - like husband, like wife eh?!)

The glasses I purchased on the last trip, however, was from a new boutique that we had just discovered. While going up and down Rue du Bac, trying to locate my mother's antique jewellery stall, we managed to find this little gem of a shop called Les Opticiens du Bac. I love the shop! They specialise in round eyewear and even make their own! A collection they so wonderfully named La Brigitte. They also sell handmade leather cases like the one displayed below. The picture does not do it justice, though! The actual case is finely made from the most supple leather and comes in burgundy or dark brown. If ever you find yourself in Paris, do check out Les Opticians du Bac in the 7th arrondisement and Retrovision in le Marais.

If you're in KL, I would highly recommend Reliance Optical in Bangsar. I think they have the widest selection of brands within one shop in KL and all reasonably priced. It's a family-owned business and they're all so helpful and nice! They don't force you into making a purchase and they genuinely help you in your decision. I think they're the main reason my collection have grown so drastically within just two years. Definitely check them out and don't forget to ask for Lim! ;)

For the moment, I think I should curb my expenditure on new prescription glasses. If I were to buy a new one (and that's a big if!), I think I'll go for a proper round frame and maybe one in light matte colours. In the meantime, I'll keep myself contented with these red ones that make me feel tres parisienne ooh la la! ;)

Midnight Musings

It's actually an hour past midnight but I thought midnight musings would be a more catchy title. Recently, I have had several thoughts running through my mind about all the things we need to get done since our big move back to KL.

Upmost on the list would be, of course, to get jobs and start working asap. To clean up the room is also quite high on the list especially if you could see the condition the room is in at the moment (think pigsty). I think we've been procrastinating on cleaning big time just because theres so much to do and we get distracted by pictures (mostly involving me and my loving husband laughing his head off) and old CDs (what up, Ja Rule!).

Another thing we need to consider is whether Toha would be going to playschool or staying at home. Is two too young an age to send a child to school? Then again, I really want him to learn how to socialise with other kids his age and probably it will help with his vocabulary and manners too.

Specifically for me, I would really really love to pick up french again! Every time we've been to Paris since my undergrad in 2010, I could feel my french slowly and slowly becoming nonexistent 'till the last trip where I could hardly speak french at all! And it's such a pity as I was quite good at it (if I do say so myself, hah!).

And intertwined with all these thoughts is the underlining yearning to be back in the UK. I knew it was going to be hard moving back after seven years abroad but I didn't know it was going to be THIS hard. I think it just hit us that no, we wont be able to go to Waterstones for our favourite mocha whenever it pleases us or weekly trips to Wholefoods Market to stock up on coconut yoghurt or wear matching winter clothes with the baby!!!

Don't get me wrong, of course being in Malaysia is great. Having family and close friends just a drive away is what I missed the most when we were far but I think seven years in the UK has made it feel more like home than my own country (especially since you can take a 2 hour train ride to Paris whenever you feel like it! Or when it's cheapest usually in my case lol).

I guess the reality has just sinked in that, although we would be going to Paris, London, and Manchester again, it wouldn't be permanent. Plus we would have to deal with new responsibilities and obligations now back in Malaysia instead of living the carefree life we had back in the UK. But that's life I guess and Alhamdulillah I did get the experience and I've made so many good friends that are more like families along the way.

That being said, the future is so unexpected and you never know where life might take you. So, for now, insyaAllah our new life in Malaysia will be good for us but we will constantly work towards our goals ( bearing in mind if it's the best decision for the family in life and the hereafter ). So no matter where life takes us, I pray that we will still be strong as a family and be good Muslims. InsyaAllah, Amin.

Monsieur Toto pour Petit Bateau!

Many a times when we are in London or Paris, we find ourselves drawn to the Petit Bateau boutique. Despite indulging in a healthy dose of online shopping at said store, nothing could compare to the pleasures of actually meandering through the boutique and oohing and aahing over the adorable children clothes. Mind you, I do a lot of squealing at the women's department too which resulted in several marinieres in different colours to add to my already exhaustive collection of stripes clothes.

That being said, this visit was special as we had a mission in mind. That mission being to purchase the classic Petit Bateau raincoat for Monsieur Toto in that delicious yellow colour. It did not disappoint!
My Toha Ahmad looked trop mignon in the raincoat! Suffice to say it was his best buy of this trip. Sadly, the matching wellies came in a size too big resulting in some crying when we had to explain to the little man that no, the shoes will NOT be going home with us.

Now the only thing left is to purchase a matching yellow raincoat for maman and we're good to go! ( Hint, hint to the daddy :) )

Café Kitsuné à Paris

Last month, I was over the moon when my mom said we would be able to squeeze a short trip to Paris during our three weeks stay in London. The fact that we would be staying in a Parisian apartment, as opposed to the usual hotels, just made it even more sweeter! I will reserve a separate post for our amazing apartment ( with a view of the Eiffel Tower no less! ). This post I would like to dedicate entirely to the joy that is Café Kitsuné .

Ideally situated in the enchanting Jardin du Palais Royal, the cafe itself is quite small but with more seating options outside where you get to appreciate the tranquil beauty of the classic Parisian garden. To sit at the coffee bar is a joy, too, as you can engage yourself in the Maison Kitsuné lifestyle through the music and converse with the friendly baristas. A word of warning though, it can be dangerous for avid shoppers like me due to the selection of Kitsuné accessories and music compilations that you can purchase ( I nearly walked out with a shopper to join all my other shopper bags which I hardly ever use!) .

In the likelihood that there are no seatings available, I would definitely recommend you to get a coffee to go as the coffee was quite good. There are also a selection of gluten-free sweets from Noglu to satisfy your sweet tooth and cold-pressed juices from Bob's Juice Bar

Overall, Café Kitsuné was definitely a treat made all the more sweeter as we got to enjoy our coffee while watching the sunset.

Sunset on the Jardin du Palais Royal while sipping exquisite Kitsuné coffee seems like a dream at the moment. Oh well, heres to more dream-like moments at other charming spots!

Bienvenue!

Bonjour!

After several years of hiatus, I decided to give blogging another go. A breath of fresh air and new life, or so to speak, as indeed a new life is involved in the form of one Toha 'Toto' Ahmad (hence the name of the blog). Heres to documenting the life and times of one Madame Iman Kamarudin; a daughter, a wife, a mother, and a secret Parisian at heart. This blog will encompass all my musings and discoveries mostly related to life and the three cities I frequently inhabit; Paris, London and Malaysia. Happy reading!
